Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos is relevant to the Pitru Paksha Shraaddha, or Pitr Paksh Shradh.

In the Hindu religion (Indian), it is the ritual that families perform the homage to ancestors’ called as  Pitṛ in sanskrit, especially to one’s dead parents that is performed on the death anniversary or during the Pitru Paksha (Pitr Paksh) or Shraaddha paksha (Shradh Paksh).

It is an important ritual as per the Hindu tradition. It is performed as a Pitr Puja for aatma shanti of departed ancestors. It is an act of tribute and respect, devotion towards ancestors (Pitr Puja). Appeasing the dearly departed souls and offering them respect before God’s presence helps enhance one’s well-being and It is especially helpful to eliminate the effects of Pitr Dosh.

Pitru Paksha Days – Shradh Days

In the month of Ashwin each year, during Krishna Paksh, i.e. 15 days starting from Purnima (full moon) to Amavasya (dark night) “Shradh” days are celebrated. It is stated that if a person who does not tribute the Shradh of his departed paternal and maternal near and dear he has to bear much in life and even after.

Pitru Paksha Shraaddha, or Pitr Paksh Shradh is closely relevant to Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, a Mexico festival.

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in the particular Central and South regions. Day of the Dead is celebrating on 2nd November, as Creation of altars to remember the dead, traditional dishes for the Day of the Dead, which is similar to Pitru Paksha Shraaddha, or Pitr Paksh Shradh, an Indian Hindu religion festival.

It includes the festivals and parades, as well as gatherings of families at cemeteries to pray for their deceased loved ones at the end of the day. Whereas, Pitru Paksha is a 15 lunar day’s period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially with the food offerings.

The day of the Dead helps the living celebrates the loved ones who have been died. But today’s people celebrate it as paint their faces to look like skulls and decorating to represent a deceased loved one or an expression of themselves.

The Colors of Day of the Dead:
  • Purple – Signifies pain, suffering, grief, and mourning.
  • Pink – Celebration.
  • White – Purity and hope.
  • Orange – Sun.
  • Red – The blood of life.
  • Yellow – profuse marigolds that symbolize death. Petals are used to make a trail. So that the spirits can see the path to their altars.

To the unfamiliar, it may be surprising that the profuse marigold is the traditional flower for Day of the Dead. Because the marigold, and flowers in general, represent the fragility of life. It is believed that the spirits of our departed loved ones come to visit during the celebration and marigolds are used to help guide the spirits with their vibrant color.

Offering things go on the altars to remember the dead are:
  • Incense made of copal, which is pine resin, and used to communicate with the spirit world.
  • Bread for the dead as a sweet treat for the spirits.
  • Water and other drinks.
  • Paper banners.
  • Skull.
